Creator News - Revision to MTS guidelines regarding inline pictures
Posted by Delphy, 2nd Jul 2009 at 12:42 AM (15 comments)

A note to creators: With the implementation of an automatic -image resize script here on MTS (to drop down images that are larger than 800x600 to that size), we've removed the inline image size requirements that have been a part of our guidelines for a long time.

Please note that the limit of 4 inline pics still applies, but these pics can now be the same size as the attached ones.

We hope you enjoy the change, and wish you all the best of luck in whatever you are creating next!

With the release of The Sims 3, and the flurry of activity it has created, we have instituted a regular front page update for modding news and new tools. If you are interested in more information, please click on the links below.

CAS:
  • Delphy has released the CAS Texture Unitool that aims to let you create designs on T-Shirts and such. Keep in mind that it is still in Beta; so bookmark the link for updates. There are also new tutorials for Create a Sim artists. See: CAS Tools and Tutorials
Patterns:
  • There are two new tools available for custom pattern creation: Delphy's Pattern Packager, and The Sims 3 Workshop.
Each program is a bit different. Try both to see which one better suits your needs. There are also 4 new tutorials on pattern creation. See: Pattern Tools and Tutorials
Meshing:
  • Wes Howe is doing work with Milkshape plug-ins at Custom Sims 3. He has also written a tutorial, available at the same site. Meshing Tools and Tutorials
Building:
  • Feldynn has written a very useful tutorial on roofing, to create a basic roof with different slope angles, and aphexZero has a tutorial showing us how to build an aquarium pool in The Sims 3. Find them in the Build Section. It's also worth noting that many TS2 build tricks and techniques work exactly the same in TS3 (for example, building a walk-out basement).
Installation/Content Tools:
  • Lots of new tools for installing sims 3 content such as Delphy's Install Monkey and Marhis' Installation tool for Mac users. Click here for more info on all the new installation tools.
General Modding:
  • Lots and lots of new tools have been recently developed for modding TS3 including the S3PE Demo Package Editor and Echo's Postal- Package Editor. Find them all in the General Modding section of the Wiki.

If you want to talk about Sims 3 modding or to join in some of the discussion threads, please see our Sims 3 Modding Discussion section.

Site News - Sims 3 downloads!
Posted by Delphy, 3rd Jun 2009 at 12:22 AM (30 comments)

With the release of the game, we are starting to see some Sims 3 uploads here on MTS. I've added a little icon in the top right of all downloads that tells you easily which game the download is compatible with - either TS2 or TS3.

Additionally, when you view the Downloads Home page there will be a box saying "Switch To" with the TS3 logo. Click that logo and it will take you to the TS3 downloads.

If you want to bookmark the MTS TS3 downloads, you may do so using this url: http://sims3.modthesims.info/

I've also made a modified version of the Site Map containing only TS3 related forums, sections and links. It can be accessed here: http://www.modthesims.info/sitemap.php?view=ts3

I'm sure our creators and tool writers are busy hard at work looking at the game and seeing what can be done... I hope you'll join me in wishing them all the luck, and I hope to see some great Sims 3 downloads here soon!

Site News - Winner of the MTS Logo contest, site name change, and other things
Posted by Delphy, 1st Jun 2009 at 02:44 PM (22 comments)

I'm pleased to announce that black0rchid has won the MTS logo contest we held earlier this year. We've put the new up on the top left of the pages, and will be working on cafepress etc once we are less busy from TS3.

Congrats to black0rchid and thank you to all the rest of the participants!

Secondly, you may have noticed that the URLs for the site have changed from modthesims2.com to modthesims.info. All existing links will redirect, and should be working, and thumbnails and downloads should work too. There may be some pages where it still references modthesims2.com but thats fine - everything should work.

Please note! Due to the name change you WILL need to login again. Just use your old MTS2 login and password.

Thirdly, we've slightly redone the Member Profile pages - the old "Gallery" tab has been renamed to "Creativity", and now also incorporates members Stories and any Movies they have posted in the relevant forums.

We hope you enjoy the changes, assuming anybody notices becuase they are too excited about TS3.

Niote: With regards to the site changeover there might be some weirdness going on - and I know there are a ton of references to "MTS2" that we need to change, so please bear with us in any breakages.

Tech News - Notice of downtime - Tuesday 26th May or Wednesday 27th May
Posted by Delphy, 24th May 2009 at 08:37 PM (74 comments)

MTS2 will be down on one of these days (I don't know which yet) for a switch upgrade and a server migration. During the migration all MTS2 servers will be offline, including downloads, thumbs, and normal www. After the migration all MTS2 servers will have new IP addresses, and there will be additional downtime to bring a secondary database server online.

This message is purely informational and will self-destruct in 27 seconds.

Site News - MTS2 and S2C Merge is now complete!
Posted by Delphy, 19th May 2009 at 11:15 PM (218 comments)

The downtime today was for me to work on merging the two sites, as per the news announcements of late.

Here is what has been copied across:
  • User names (See below)
  • Forums
  • Posts
  • Threads
  • Social Groups

What has not been copied across are:
  • Private Messages
  • Avatars
  • Stars & Features (will be done later)
  • Deleted threads

The user names have been imported as follows:
  • Any user names that have identical usernames and emails, have been left untouched, except for any S2C posts being assigned to them
  • Any user names that existed on both S2C and MTS2, but the email address where different, have been imported as (Username)_SC (note the _SC on the end). If you have trouble logging on as your normal S2C nick, try adding _SC on the end
  • Any user names that existed on S2C but not on MTS2 have been added as a new user

Some forum changes:
  • The S2C Contests forum has been condensed down to "Ongoing Contests", which have a category of the type (Beauty, Houses, etc)
  • Where Can I Find...? has been moved to the Game Help area
  • Computer & Software help has been moved to the Game Help area

The old forums are still available at http://old.sims-community.com/ - you may login there to make copies of your avatar, private messages, etc, but the entire forum is locked, so you may not post.

If you need an S2C username merging into an MTS2 one (if it's an _SC one or entirely different), or a name change (S2C users only!) please post here in this thread.

BEFORE REQUESTING A NAME CHANGE, READ THIS!

To check if a username is actually taken, use http://www.modthesims2.com/member/USERNAMEHERE (Replace USERNAMEHERE with the one you want to check)

If the username you request is already taken, you will NOT be able to have a name change.

Contents that have been submitted are currently on hold while we get the new moderation systems up and running for these sections.

Note: The avatar size here on MTS2 is smaller than that on S2C - this is not likely to change anytime soon. You may have to resize your avatar down to 100x100 to make it fit.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Site News - New look Profile Pages, Achievements, Subscription Groups, and possibly more
Posted by Delphy, 13th May 2009 at 11:26 PM (86 comments)

This is another one of the regular posts that I do, where I put new features live on MTS2. Today we have brand new profile pages (for all!), achievements, and a change to the way Subscriptions work. With possibly a lollipop.

Okay so, first:

Tabbed Profile Pages

This is basically a new version of the profile pages, but instead of having everything all on one big scrolling screen, it's now split up (similar to how the Download tabs work).

The following tabs are possible:

- Overview. This is the basic tab that shows Downloads, Policies, and other information like Signature.
- Gallery. This is a page that shows all of the default thumbnails (and larger pics, in lightbox style), for all downloads that creator has (See Fanseelambs profile for a better view.
- Articles This is a list of Articles, such as tutorials, news items, etc, that the person has written (this used to be on the main page at the bottom).
- Journal The journal tab lists the most recent 10 journal entries, all customised in the creators custom profile colours, if setup.
- Guestbook Similar to the journal, the Guestbook shows the most recent Guestbook replies, and additionally is now customised to your colours.
- Accomplishments This tab lists whether the creator has entered or gotten an Exceptional in one of our official creator challenges, but also lists any "Achievements". These are detailed below.
- Fave Creators This tab acts like the old "Fave Creators" tab on the old profile page with one difference - it is now available to all members.
- Fave Downloads This tab acts like the old "Fave Downloads" tab on the old profile page, again with the difference that now it's for everybody.

A couple of other things:
- Guestbooks now appear in the custom colours of the creators profile
- Journals now have the last 5 entries, rather than a chopped off last 1
- Favourite Creators and Favourite Downloads will always appear, even on non-creator profiles.
- I removed the mini-journal from the left sidebar
- Journal is now removed from the Overview page
- Challenge entries and wins are moved to the Accomplishments page
- Achievements will appear on the Accomplishments page
- The tabs are loaded in via AJAX using jQuery so should be fairly robust
- Moving data to other tabs results in less loading and checking on the main Overview tab, which means a little less work for the creators.
- Moved the "Other Info" panel to the left sidebar on the tabbed profiles, and renamed it "Member Activity".
- I've created a new tab for "Articles" that appears only if the person has articles or tutorials in the various sections. The articles also have the custom profile colours of the user now too. Articles have been removed from the "Overview" section.
- I've removed the "Top Download" from the "split" section on Featured Creators profiles (it was split with Personal Picks before) and instead moved it to the left sidebar directly below the Creator Info (avatar etc).
- The Personal Picks section now spans the entire row, and is centred (as opposed to being left aligned before). The number of personal picks is now a maximum of 8 if you are featured/moomoo etc, or 4 if you are picked. They do not appear at all if you aren't picked or featured. Personal Picks 5 and onwards appear on a second row and are left aligned just like the Download part (this is not going to change).
- I've also added a "Random Download" that isn't the top download and isn't displayed on the front page, but could be a Personal Pick. This displays just below the Top Download in the left sidebar.

I hope you will all agree that the tabbed profile pages offer a lot more information presented in a better fashion, and becuase a lot of things are split off into tabs that only load on click, should be a little lighter on the servers too.

One thing that I want to make clear to everybody: This change is not reversible - that is, you cannot go back to the old way of viewing profile pages. This is entirely deliberate and I have no plans to ever enable this. I feel that the tabbed pages in conjunction with jQuery/AJAX are the way ahead for the site, so my work is concentrated there.

Okay, so, next up:

Achievements

On the new tabbed profile pages you now have a tab called "Accomplishments". Part of this tab is the Achievements system. This is basically a way of having an "Achievement" (kind of like on Xbox Live) that you have done something on the site. We are starting off with Featured/Picked, Number of Thanks, and Number of Downloads, but will be expanding it to number of uploads, and then individual download section achievements (for example, my Mad Scientist achievement) later on.

We feel that this is a great way to showcase to the user what a creator is up to on the site, and is also a good way for a creator to check what Achievements they have accomplished.

Currently, the achievements system is run manually (once every couple of days), but as I ramp it up and add new ones in, it will become automated once every 24 hours.

Also, Thanks to Lethe_s and The_French_Sim for the original idea of Achievements, and fanseelamb, Phaenoh and plasticbox for the help. A HUGE thanks goes to HystericalParoxysm for drawing all the cute little people! Gotta catch them all!

Forum Subscription Views and New Posts changes

Those of you who use the New Posts screen may or may not have noticed that there has long been a link there to allow people to "filter" individual sections - either to hide or to show them - so that your New Posts experience is not neccesarily all cluttered up with Downloads.

What I have added today is a way that people can have different "Views" into the forum subscription system - for example, as a staff member, I have one View just for staff related forums, and another for more social things, and a final one just for subscribed threads, but as a Creator you might want to seperate out Modding forums from the social ones (for example).

To use this system just click the link that appears on New Posts (the line that says "To change or filter which forums display here, or to add a new view, click here".)

Finally, the New Posts screen has been modified so that Social Groups do not appear unless you specifically specify them to do so, and additionally, the Download forums do not appear in the Forum Subscription system anymore. This is becuase the Download browsing system is the best way to see new downloads, and as a Creator, you have access to the Feedback system to see comments on your own threads, so I felt that leaving this on New Posts was redundant to many people.

Thats pretty much it for now. Enjoy the changes!
