Default What are the can't-live-without mods for Sims 4?
I remember seeing stickies in both the Sims 2 and Sims 3 forums where people listed and discussed their can't-live-without mods, and it was very helpful for me. But maybe my search skills have faded, but I don't see any such thread for Sims 4. I've only been playing for a couple of days, since the big free-base-game promotion, but I'm finding that the unmodded game is pretty annoying. As were the others, but once modded, they were really fun! So I have hopes. So I'm ready to mod my game. Particularly, I want to nip in the bud the game's predilection for making my teens into mischief makers when I gave no indication in the (limited) process of creating them that they would do any such thing. Also, having created a married couple, I would like to easily cheat their relationship into what it ought to be--they should not be just getting to know each other when they have three children, one of them a teen! (I am sure there are cheat console ways to do the latter, but it would be nice to have a central way of doing all these things)

Is MC Command Center that thing? Why does it come up so little when I search it to see what people think of it and how they use it?

What else should I know about? I can't really evaluate the mods I see when I have played so little: but I fear that, unless I mod this game pretty thoroughly I won't be playing it enough to know which mods I need.

Mccommand is that thing it controls a lot about the game I would go to the web site and read the things it controls. I wouldn't run my game without it.

I can live without mods, but I can't play without them..

MCCC is one of the must-haves. (if you were searching with the full name of the mod it's probably why you couldn't find much, but using only MCCC might do the trick)
it's hard to describe it in a sentence, it does so much. it allows you to control almost every aspect of the game and alter it to your liking. it's just a great mod to have.

the UI cheats extension is a mod that lets you cheat by clicking on the screen instead of typing cheat codes, and it's also very useful
you can cheat the relationship of your sims to 100% on both friendship and romance, if that's what you wanted.

SCAM is a great mod that let you ban any action from being autonomous. it is implemented into MCCC (Tuner > Auto Scan), but I find the original version much more user-friendly..(and it doesn't conflict with MCCC)
you can stop your sims from doing all sorts of stupid actions, like kicking trash bins, destroy the poor doll house, drink water from the (toilet) sink and any other action that you do not approve.
they will still do it if you tell them to, just not on their own.

and saving the best for last - LittleMsSam is my favorite creator. she's just brilliant and I love everything she does.
besides creating amazing mods, and overhauling game features to their best, she's also fixing annoying bugs way before, and way better than the game creators does.
you should check out her Simda app, First Love, Live-in Business, Ultra scan mod, Roommates, Online Learning System, Where Are You, Social Activities, random small mods, her bug fixes (necessity) and basically all of them.

Thank you! I've been studying MC Command Center and it looked like what I wanted but I couldn't find reports of people's experiences. I don't see compatibility discussion yet, so I'm assuming that each module is good for basegame unless it's clearly made for an expansion or game pack?

So I'm not installing "occult" or "gedcom" because really my sims are not Mormons! Everything else looks like it's compatible?

It doesn't require any pack, you can install it with only the BG.
it's also compatible with most mods, as most people are using this mod, including other mod creators.

Some reviews that popped up in my search results:

Edit: you can delete the MC Clubs, but I think you don't HAVE to, it's just not gonna work, since you don't have Get Together.
the Gedcom one: "Provides support for the GEDCOM family tree export format to allow import of your in-game family tree into one of the GEDCOM-compatible family-tree programs." (MCCC website)
and the Occult one is for aliens and vampires which you also don't have.
you can delete those 3 files.
