Default Question about downtown areas
I've been playing The Sims 2 since the get go, and still find it to be the best version of The Sims to this day, mainly because of the customization of the neighbourhood. I made a map on SC4 and treat it as sort of a small country, with a town centre in the middle of the map and seven surrounding town areas, each having a theme, like Superheroes, celebrities, Maxis sims (there's a site where you can download them packaged, so as not to destroy my game), IRL friends etc. When I did this on my old laptop, it eventually got so populated that when I tried to add another lot to the map, the game crashed. I've recently started playing again on my newer laptop (after discovering the awesome Graphics Rules Maker) and I've got all the lots I need in place and it's running fine, but I'm getting twitchy about the game starting to crash.

I've read about Megahoods, where all the hoods from Strangetown onwards are made to be downtown or shopping sub hoods, so I was wondering about starting again with a main neighbourhood with my family and IRL friends, and then several sub hoods with the other themes. If I did this would the sims living in the sub hoods show up on community lots in my main hood, or do they stick to their own hoods? I've never really used shopping districts or downtown, I always just put community lots in my main hood to cut down on loading times. Thanks!

Sims from all subhoods will show up on community lots from other subhoods. Aside from downtownies, which are townies that only appear in Downtown. Public transportation must be really good in Simland.

There are hacks that keep walkbys (Sims who walk by on residential lots) confined to their own subhood, but I don't use it as it conflicts with something else.

I actually do the same thing - my own custom main hood with all the EAxis (and a few fanmade) hoods attached. It takes a while to load, but I also have a couple gigabytes of custom content and hacks and such.

If you're thinking of doing this, I suggest grabbing Tarlia's cleaned hoods - the premade ones are pretty glitchy and tend to explode in a fiery ball of corruption at some point.

There's also ways to disable the generation of townies, but I don't recall them at the exact moment.

Awesome, thanks. I wanted to make it still look like a community, and not have everyone confined to their own hoods unless I move them physically, like in The Sims 4. I have a mod in place (Think it's a Chris Hatch mod) that stops Townies from regenerating and I usually use NPC killer to Order 66 the lot of them so I only have my actual residents and service NPCs. I will take a look at the cleaned hoods, I've been reading about them lately. Thanks for the response!

EDIT: Not NPC killer, the NPC and Townie Maker
FURTHER EDIT: It was Pescado, not Chris Hatch.

Playables from all areas except universities will show up as walkbys in main hood. To see them all together you can visit hobby lots. Hobby lot will call all sims from neighborhood with same hobby. What a good thing to introduce sims with each other. Children and teens can bring home schoolmates from all neighborhood, even from vacation destinations and family bin. Maybe they have only one public school for all.

Depending on what sort of walkbys you want, there are a couple of different mods. All Walkbys by Cyjon makes it so that friends will walk by as well instead of just strangers. YA Visitors Outside Uni (bottom of post) allows young adults to show up on community and downtown lots. I also use Cyjon's Townie Apartment Residents , so sometimes I get YAs moving into apartments (and I think I've seen them as walkbys, but I'm not certain). Though if you're intending to cull all townies, that probably isn't useful to you.

I don't know why someone has clicked Disagree, but I've certainly have playable teens bring home Downtownie teens from school. It's how I first met some of my favourite Sims! So I'd be very surprised if it didn't work with Downtownie children too. If you still disagree, please post and say why, because, as far as I can see, mdsb759 is right.

Now if you want to try something new and go all the way back to the beginning then how about my "Beginning Hoods".

Have your own main hood or chose one of mine from the "Beginning Hood" series. This is the starting one that got all of them going. "The Beginning of Pleasantview." http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=521653
Then attach any or all of the other ones as shopping districts. I made all of them as shopping districts. "9 New Shopping Districts" http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=523417
There are no houses in them and all of the sims were made and never touch so as long as they stay in the family bin they will never show up as walkbys.
(There are houses in the Old Town hood but not in the Beginning Hoods.)

Personally, I love marka's beginning hoods, especially Bluewater Village - but there is also no reason why you can't make your won mega hood with custom main and subhoods.

I've had it happen, but not very often. Probably because there aren't that many downtownie kids.

@mdsb759

If you use clean and empty templates or the mini game for all but Downtown and your kids/teens want to bring home a friend then it will pull from Downtown because they are the only kids/teens to pull from.

If you have townies in your main hood that includes kids/teens then it will pull from those first before pulling from Downtown. Also if you have a bunch of born in game/starting hood kids/teens it will first try to pull from them then from the townies pool and last from downtown pool.
